Women in Motion
by Jean Lundberg
Our lives as women are full of change and transition. Some of these changes are predictable. Because we are women we know that certain things go with the territory.
Some of us will marry, some will have children. Some will have rewarding and/or demanding careers in the corporate world, or in our own business. Others will choose to work at home (also a rewarding and demanding career), just to name a few. Our bodies, minds and needs will change as we grow. As women, we are exposed to certain stressors that can be specific to our gender. We ARE different, and in many cases we have goals, needs and obligations than are distinct from those of our male counterparts
There are tremendous avenues available for women to assist us with change, stressors, emotional, spiritual, financial, and health needs, in both our personal and professional lives. There are books, audio tapes, seminars, classes and much more. I found as I experienced and researched what is available that there was something missing from what was out there. There were few, if any, programs that deal comprehensively with all of the factors above. From that discovery “Women in Motion” was conceived and developed.
I have an amazing network of women friends and colleagues that I’ve grown to know over time, through nurturing the relationships and making an effort not to lose touch over the years. When planning “Women In Motion”, I contacted each of them and after describing what I hoped to accomplish with the seminars, asked them, “How have your life and your priorities changed, particularly from the time you were in your 20’s or early 30’s?” “How have your values changed, in the areas of your daily life, finances, career, health, and personal goals?” “How could a seminar like “Women in Motion” support and guide you to be more focused, happier and more in tune with the life you want to create for yourself?.” How would you, as you read this, answer those questions?
The vision of “Women in Motion,” is to bring small groups of women (10-15) together for a day and a half experience. There we will focus on essential keys to living positively and successfully. Remember that success means very different things to different people. We’ll provide support and practical guidance for participants to add to their life toolkit. Participants will also learn from other successful women from all age groups and walks of life and from some of the greatest thinkers of our time and throughout history.
Following are overviews of the primary modules included in “Women in Motion”:
CHANGE IS UNCOMFORTABLE. WHY CAN’T THINGS JUST STAY THE SAME?
The one constant in all of our lives and across genders, is that we will experience change. Change occurs regularly, from the adjustments in our daily routines to major shifts in our home lives, careers, health and more. From our first breath to our last, change is a part of life.
“Women in Motion” will prepare participants to understand and face change, and more importantly, to embrace change willingly and to learn from it. Resistance to change in all its forms is common. Much has been written about the various stages we go through as we experience change. These writings define from three to ten stages that make up the process of change. Regardless of the number of stages we define, what these plans all have in common is that we must understand and move through change in our lives to a conclusion that is healthy, productive and that promotes learning in preparation for future change. “Women in Motion” seminars use proven techniques and practical real life applications and the stories shared by women in each seminar group, to assure that participants are not only better prepared for all types of change in their lives, but to give them what they need to be ready and able to self impose change willingly when they know it’s right for them to do so. Change becomes something that does create resistance and attempts to avoid or deny, but through our seminars it also becomes a natural and necessary part of a fulfilled and directed life.
STRESS AND ANXIETY
Almost everywhere we go today, we hear women saying that they feel more stress, more anxiety than they can every remember feeling before. Often, the comments are followed by, “I guess that’s just the way it is. After all, everyone’s more stressed out. I’ll have an extra cocktail at the end of the day, exercise harder, or avoid that person at work that’s driving me crazy.” Through use of practical, interactive exercise and discussion, women will learn to identify and understand the true stressors in their lives and most importantly, learn how to reduce or eliminate their reactions to them. Is the cause of stress really a job, a co-worker, a busy home life, or is it something more specific in that setting. That more specific something may be misunderstood, communicated badly, or blown out of proportion and made overwhelming and therefore seemingly impossible to deal with.
COMMUNICATION
Through application of the DISC assessment women will perhaps for the first time truly understand how and why they view and react to the world and those in it as they do. Sometimes a response from an individual upon reviewing their assessment results may be “Oh, I already knew that” or “That’s not me at all”. Discussion and diving deeper into the meaning and uses of the assessment results will clarify what drives us, challenges us and frustrates us. It will unmask why certain relationships both business and personal work and others are a struggle. “How can I communicate so well with one person, and not get where others are coming from at all?” Participants will learn how to communicate with bosses, spouses, children and others effectively and openly. Experts in the field of communication and those who are avid spectators of the world around us, know that good communication or lack thereof, can make or break everything from business deals and productive work environments to marriages, friendships and encounters with strangers.
MONEY AND FINANCES
The roughly 90 million women in the between the ages of 35 and 60 control most of the spending in the . This seminar is not a financial planning session, but it is a practical look at techniques for safeguarding and managing money. Most of us are not happy with our finances, and often our values do not match the way we spend, save or don’t save and how we view money in general. During this module we’ll also discuss the financial issues that are largely unique to women. Great tips from a successful female money manager are central to this module. You’ll never view money the same way again.
MANAGING TIME
There are only so many hours in the day and yet our lives seem to require more and more of that time. Many women have become experts at multi-tasking, but the reality is that for all the activities we’re juggling at one time, all are suffering from lack of true focus and attention. If we are talking on the phone, checking email on our Blackberry or computer, thinking about that life affirming book we just finished, and considering the view out the window, all at the same time, which activity really has our full attention? The answer is none of the above, yet all have a valuable place in our lives. This module will show participants how to slow down, to prioritize and to accomplish more while achieving balance in your professional and personal lives. Does anyone remember the joys of a real personal life? It can be yours again.
